The state of the economy has reached far and wide and yes, even those big–ticket salary–holders have been laid off or are having problems finding jobs. While there have always been specialty job boards catering to specific industries, sites that catered to specific levels of income were unheard of. Not anymore. There are several options available for those who were lucky enough to have salaries well into the six figures, but more importantly, there is actually an abundance of jobs specifically pertaining to Internet executives.

Executive positions are not for the meek of heart. This position faces the dangers of blame, much like a manager or head coach of a sports team. They often get way too much credit when things are going well, but also take too much blame for when the company’s fortunes take a downward spiral. Another challenge faced in this type of position is that you are not as likely to get hired as a high-end executive unless you already have a proven track record. Most executives are promoted from within and have gone through the ranks of their current company.

If you have been terminated from your last position, it does not necessarily mean you are going to have problems finding another executive position in another industry. Your reputation will speak volumes about how you will handle a new position and it is something you are going to want to protect at all costs. This is the one value that you will have to fall back on regardless of what happens to the company that you are working for. As long as your reputation stays intact and you are regarded as someone that is honest, hardworking, and knowledgeable, you should have no problem obtaining a new position in your industry or in something new.

Executives are very adaptable people. At that level of management, you possess talents that you can interchange amongst industries. If you may have been a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a medical supplies company, that does not exclude you from becoming the CEO of another distribution company. You may also be able to expand into other fields with very little adaptation challenges. One of the areas that you definitely need to explore is the role of an Internet executive. One of the few job markets that is constantly expanding is the Internet and while its markets are very diverse, the essence of running a quality company remains the same.

A major company that is a perfect example of what we are talking about is Windows. Here is a company that has executives at many different levels and areas of expertise and they are known for moving them from one area to the next. In late 2006, when Vista was getting ready to launch, they moved one of their most-prominent architect executives to their Live Labs division. While he was obviously still with the same company and in the same industry, he was taking on an entirely different aspect of the company.

Telecommunications is another area where good executives are needed. You constantly read articles about the direction the industry is taking and how out of touch they are with the needs of the industry. That is an area where an executive who adapts at seeing trends and ensuring that their products are aimed in the direction to best take advantage of these trends could become a sought-after executive in no time at all. The lengths to which these companies will go to become number one is amazing, and finding someone that could finally take them there would be invaluable, and more importantly profitable, for everyone concerned.

Now the question becomes how do you actually go about getting one of these positions? As stated before, you need to do your research. While you may have not worked in that specific industry before, that will not excuse you from not knowing the product of the company you plan on representing. You will also want to check the job specialty boards that focus on high-paying executive jobs and specifically Internet executive jobs. There are plenty of them out there, some better than others, that will give you a comprehensive list of opportunities that are available.

There are also several magazine publications and books that you can find on the Internet which will help you in a successful job search. This is not a job at a burger joint you are looking for; this is a high-paying position that will be a job in and of itself to land. You have to realize, a lot of executives have never actually interviewed outside their own company for their positions. The fact is that most of them were probably promoted from within and have never interviewed for an executive position. Being prepared will put you miles ahead of them regardless of their background and reputation.

The Internet has definitely increased the availability of executive positions, but, more importantly, has created its own niche of high-paying Internet executive positions. Are you the next leader of the next up-and-coming industry? Can you take a small Internet company and bring them into the land of the giants? Without taking full advantage of the opportunities available to you, you will never know. It is time to dive into the market and put your skills up for bid. The Internet is a wonderful place with incredible advantages that the normal business world will never have.
