Judy was looking for a permanent job as a bookkeeper. She knew she wanted her next full-time job to be one where she could utilize her knowledge of insurance claims and billing medical charges, along with her general bookkeeping skills. She asked the service where she applied for temporary work to offer her jobs as a bookkeeper in a hospital or with a medical practice.

The service had a request from a hospital for a temp to work in the business office as a bookkeeper. The hospital did not know if it was going to be able to fill the position full-time, because it was under a hiring freeze. But the hospital's business office had to complete its work and needed a temp to help.

The service offered the temp assignment to Judy. When she asked if the job might go full-time, the service shared with her the fact that the hospital was under a hiring freeze and did not know when it would be able to hire someone full-time. She was glad she did go on the job, because she found out working in a hospital was nothing like she thought it would be, and she did not like it. She stayed at the hospital for two months and was then placed by the staffing service in a medical practice. Judy liked this temp job much better because the pace was different from the pace of the hospital, there were fewer people to work with, and she enjoyed using her skills a lot more.

This smaller office did not need another permanent employee (the full-time bookkeeper was on vacation), but the staff did know of another doctor's office that was looking to hire a permanent bookkeeper.

The medical practice recommended Judy to the other private practice that needed someone with her skills on a permanent basis. Judy accepted the job and would not have found it if she hadn't temped at the first medical office.

The second way a service finds jobs for you, a temp, is by calling businesses, telling them it has someone with your knowledge available, and asking the businesses if they need someone to work temp in that area.

Tim came to a service with skills as a drafter. The service where he applied had placed people with similar drafting skills at Business Z. The service called Business Z and said it had someone available to work temp with Tim's skills. Business Z asked the service to send Tim in the following Monday to do some temp work, and later offered him a full-time job as a drafter because he had done such a good job as a temp.

The service will try to match your skills to whatever temp jobs it has to fill. You may have several jobs to choose from or just one. You could be offered something that lasts one day, one week, one month, or several months. You may be offered day hours, evening hours, or weekend jobs. Remember, every temp job is different and may pay a different wage.
