Now let us look at some very successful Medical Officers in research. Recently, Dr. Clarence L. Young, Chief Medical Officer of Protez Pharmaceuticals, was awarded the Bio-leadership Award at a Bench2Business conference in Philadelphia. The Bio-leadership Award was created by Bench2Business to ''recognize and publicize the achievement of scientists of color who have made their mark in bio-tech''3

Dr. Clarence Young, winner of the Bio-leadership Award and Vice President/Chief Medical Officer at Protez, an antibiotic developer, is being acquired by Novartis for close to $400 million dollars.

The two-day conference was funded by Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, and three other supporters, Science Center, Cephalon, and Pennsylvania Bio. The community used this as a national opportunity for new and established scientists to network with entrepreneurs of color. Biotech investors were there to network about opportunities in the life sciences industry.

In Tampa, Florida, an experienced Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Emmet B. Keeffe, was hired by Romark Laboratories, LC (a privately owned company). He is from Stanford University Medical Center and spent his life as a clinical investigator. His research was in the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis. Romark Laboratories is a biotech company, which is researching and establishing clinical development programs that use small molecules for treating infectious diseases, cancers and autoimmune diseases.

In September of 2008, Dr. John P. Hanrahan was hired as Chief Medical Office and Senior Vice President of Pumatrix, a biotech company.
