They will not simply hire someone who is just out of school to run their marketing department, as there are many things that must be learned before you will be ready to take this step. When you first start with a marketing company, make sure that you volunteer for as many different positions as possible and try to work with the current marketing manager as closely as possible. This will allow you to gain much of the experience that you will need in the future should you choose to go after a manager position.



You will likely need to spend 3 to 5 years in a lower level position in order to receive consideration for any marketing manager jobs. When you first get your university degree, apply for jobs as a marketing assistant or market research, as this will give you a good base with which to move up in the future. The stronger your background experience is, the better chance you will have of receiving a promotion. Remember, not only will you be responsible for running a team of marketing professionals, but you will also need to give numerous presentations in front of large audiences, which can be quite difficult if you do not have prior experience.

Be sure that you make yourself as available as possible for your employer, as you might have to move elsewhere in order to gain one of the company's marketing manager jobs. If you love your current city, remember that you can always move back once you have gained the right level of experience.
