Online advertising careers were undreamt of in the beginning of the internet with small audience of geeky message boards accessible to only those able to navigate Linux. However, the internet has grown into a presence in almost every home and school and a form of entertainment and information around which sub-cultures evolve. A global audience brings with it the potential for a global market and rapidly expanding employment opportunities for those contemplating careers in online advertising.

Almost every business has an online presence in these days. Mom and pop stores may have no advertising campaign but corporations and larger companies will have an online advertising thrust to keep up with the competition. This is not limited to computers or internet services but products as prosaic as dishwashing liquid or rock stars.

Corporations may well have complete marketing thrusts dealing only with the online consumer and sales. Executive positions in online advertising careers require a unique blend of skills specifically geared toward online advertising. These usually include the traditional skills required of an advertising executive mixed with an understanding of advertising in this brand new and exciting medium, search engine optimization and more. Careers in online advertising may be corporate in nature or they can be entrepreneurial efforts consisting on one very perceptive individual or a group of individuals. The smaller the talent pool in a company the more specific skills will be required of an executive advertising manager.

For corporate careers in online advertising then a bachelor, Bachelor degree is usually required and desirable degrees may be marketing or business administration. Higher-level executive online advertising careers may well require advanced degrees including marketing and buying habits and administration skills.

Online advertising careers for individuals with high tech or IT industries may require a degree with emphasis on IT and supporting courses in business administration and marketing. These positions and requirements are as varied as the industries they represent.

Though a top executive director of online advertising in a large corporation may not need to know what search engine optimization is specifically handled they will be directing a company's advertising efforts in this realm and should have a basic knowledge of the mechanics. On the other hand, a director in a smaller company might require hands on skills because they have a smaller staff. Entrepreneurs who have chosen online advertising careers will be required to know every aspect of online advertising including how it is done. Educational requirements for these positions vary with the amount of hands on work versus administration required in a specific position.

Though the media is new in some ways, careers in online advertising especially at the executive level still require strong communication skills, the ability to build and direct a team, meet a budget, and modify a campaign if it is not performing as expected or the development or production department is not meeting timelines. These are high-pressure executive positions with increasing levels of pressure. In a corporate structure, such individuals should have strong backgrounds in online advertising and a good record to show for it since competition for management positions will be strong. Entry-level online advertising job opportunities can often be obtained with the proper education and interest. Again, a good knowledge of the internet and buying behaviors of the consumer online can help the job seeker at any level.

Corporate careers in online advertising may not require, as much traveling as other executive positions though some travel may be necessary in order to meet with branches or to meet with prospective buyers or groups. Long hours especially in order to meet deadlines are common for careers in online advertising. Executive positions or management positions bring with them higher rates of pay and more benefits but also bring more pressure. For those in a smaller corporate environment the pressure can be just as intense.

These are online advertising careers are very rewarding with opportunities to advance available to the individual with the right blend of administrative, communication and vision. The media involved on online advertising careers can be a blend of traditional videos, still life banners (billboards), infomercials, and with an added dash of search engine knowledge required to get the consumer's to the website.
