The Role:
The MetLife Innovation Office (Met.IO) helps internal organizations better understand the realm of possibilities that exist for our business. We're here to turn dynamic ideas that start with if into actionable steps that move us toward when. Through crowdsourced, facilitated, and collaborative innovation practices, Met.IO continuously reimagines how MetLife creates and delivers new forms of value for customers, associates, and business partners.
This role is responsible for driving innovation across the company through the use of Met.IO’s ideation and experimentation tools and processes. In this role, you will work with many internal and external partners across a broad range of projects and activities, seeking creative solutions to business problems. The AVP, Head Innovation Specialist will own multiple (5-10) work streams of the global innovation program with the potential for managing a small team.  This leader will develop and maintain relationships with senior leaders across the organization to drive the sourcing of new solutions, the onboarding of new companies, and the designing and execution of experiments. The work will require attention to detail, relationship building, external research, project management, various levels of reporting, an ability to juggle multiple competing priorities, and an ability to synthesize complex solutions into easily understood concepts for multiple constituencies.  This leader will drive a series of initiatives for multiple teams and partners, including actively driving support for venture capital partners and their portfolios.
This role will require strong negotiation and partnership skills working across the organization and building consensus to revise processes and procedures across the company.  A successful Assistant Vice President will leverage their abilities to engage and motivate employees to believe and support the sourcing of external capabilities and value of experimentation efforts, building repeatable processes and a record of success throughout the company. Good strategic vision, relationship management and leading teams at all levels of the organization is a necessity.  The Assistant Vice President will need to partner with resources that are already fully engaged on other project efforts and find ways to drive their strategy forward, leveraging any of the associate’s availability to achieve deliverables within the appropriate time and scope.
Further, as a member of the Innovation Office, the Assistant Vice President will lead or support a variety of team activities and one-off project initiatives.  For Met.IO this includes budgeting, strategic planning, metrics and reporting, tools and contracts, and ad hoc requests.  Project efforts could include initiatives focused on industry verticals and emerging spaces representing attractive adjacencies. These projects require an ability to quickly understand complex details and produce high-quality executive-level presentations and reports, driving significant results. In addition, the Assistant Vice President will have to flexibility to support and potentially lead enterprise special projects, often not full aligned to day-to-day innovation activities.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide direct support to the VP Innovation in all activities of the program.
Facilitate proof of concept and pilot testing of external capabilities.
Engage MetLife leaders to collect requirements and advance opportunities for new ideas.
Research new and maturing startup companies, mapping their products and services to MetLife requirements.
Manage and build partnerships with venture firms, startups, and internal resources.
Drive external capability sourcing and experimentation efforts across MetLife.
Represent Met.IO at various events, ranging from executive to associate level attendance.
Support special projects delivering future value in areas with attractive adjacencies to MetLife’s strategy.
Support and manage processes for the capture, analysis, and prioritization of innovation ideas.
Maintain and develop innovation tools and methodologies.
Facilitate innovation workshops for associates to empower internal ideation and experimentation.
Manage the day-to-day innovation budget and venture platform licensing.
Manage reporting and planning activities of the program.
Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:
Undergraduate degree with 15 or more years of experience in the financial services industry.
Experience leading innovation programs at a large Fortune 500 organization.
Experience leading teams both matrix and virtual or multiple sizes.
Ability to create a strategy and drive tactical efforts to deliver on that strategy.
Experience managing multiple strategic partnerships and relationships with client groups.
Excellent understanding of the current technology environment and cutting-edge products and services.
Strong business analysis and writing skills with the ability to articulate business concepts as manageable components.
Flexibility and openness to shifting priorities and timelines.
Accomplished facilitator/presenter.
Graduate degree.
Experience with CRM (e.g., SalesForce) and/or data visualization tools (e.g., Qlik Sense).
Experience with working in a dynamic and/or startup environment.
Experience with market research tools (Pitchbook/CB Insights).
Willingness to try new things and fail.
Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time.
