Biotech, Sciences, Executive, Manager
Pfizer is making significant investment in the creation of novel, first-in-class therapeutics by combining external partnerships, internal discovery and target validation, and dedicated large-molecule and small-molecule drug discovery capability to produce clinical candidates for the Pfizer development pipeline. This position is within the Target Sciences (TS) group, which has expertise in human genetics, computational biology, functional genomics, and target validation biology. TS works together with Pfizer's nationwide Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI) within Pfizer's broader External Science & Innovation group to deliver a broad and deep pipeline of novel and innovative drug candidates based on emerging science. The primary responsibilities of this position are to apply the capabilities of TST to initiate CTI projects from emerging science opportunities or accelerate ongoing projects, including some hands-on analysis; and to develop strategic and tactical biology plans to produce validated drug targets from genetic hypotheses for the CTI portfolio. The position requires deep expertise in human genetics, experience with drug discovery strategies and tactics, strong leadership skills within a matrixed environment, and the ability to lead, as a representative of Pfizer, key academic-industrial partnerships and consortia in support of the TS mission.
Lead the strategy of the Target Sciences (TS) department towards new and ongoing programs of the Centers for Therapeutic Innovation, its partner organization within the Emerging Science and Innovation division. Understand and evaluate CTI programs and identify the best opportunities for genetics, functional genomics, and computational biology or bioinformatics to prioritize and to accelerate existing programs. Design and execute such studies, using hands-on computational and genetic analysis and with matrix computational and biological support from within TS.
Evaluate hypotheses for drug targets that are produced by TS genetics or genetic screening, or by external academic or industrial partnerships. Research and understand these opportunities for fit within Pfizer strategic portfolio, in cooperation with subject-matter experts, to identify the most promising opportunities. Propose the key experiments and recommend the best organizational path - within TS, via CTI, or with an identified external partner - to validate target hypotheses so that they may enter the Pfizer portfolio. Lead appropriate publication of results.
Work with TS colleagues to scope and operationalize genetic and genomic resources with which to deliver key target identification and validation.
Collaborate successfully within a dynamic and agile group within the broader External Science and Innovation departmental structure to produce target packages for first-in-class drug discovery programs.
PhD, postdoctoral training, and seven years' experience in human genetics or a closely related discipline
Experience using genetics to drive drug discovery in a pharmaceutical / biotech setting
Deep expertise with one or more human disease areas relevant to Pfizer portfolio and with unmet medical need in light of current therapies
Proficiency in statistical genetic methodologies sufficient to leverage the skills of professional statisticians
Proficiency in functional genomics and in cellular and molecular biology sufficient to prepare a target validation plan in consultation with subject matter experts
Excellent leadership, collaboration, communication, and organization skills, and ability and desire to work as part of a team dedicated to innovation
Strong record of achievement as reflected in peer-reviewed publications
Proficiency in programming, scripting, querying or statistical analysis languages such as R, Python, PERL, SQL
Familiarity with Pfizer organizational structure and strategic scope
Experience for target discovery and validation for Oncology therapeutics
